P.S. 30M is an elementary school in the culturally and historically rich area of East Harlem, teaching 3-K, 4-K and K–5 grade-level students. We offer a nurturing, caring educational environment where your child can learn in a safe space.

At PS 30M, our goal is to spark the full academic potential of each student. To do so, we provide rigorous and personalized academic instruction. We also partner with parents and the community to support the whole child.
Children should fall in love with reading and writing. With both skills, they can learn anything. They can also learn how to communicate effectively. Critical thinking skills grow, too. We build these skills by discussing books read at home or in the classroom.
Independent reading gives students an extended time to read and to share their thinking. In guided reading we push students to read above their grade level with a teacher beside them. Read aloud strengthens vocabulary and public-speaking confidence. Through writing — from opinion pieces to poems — students express themselves. For our youngest students, from 3-K to first grade, we teach the basics of literacy: phonics.
We teach our students how to solve real-world problems with math. Students learn standard approaches to math, but they also learn how to develop their own. From counting to number sense and place value, we cover all core aspects of math. Students in the first grade learn addition and subtraction facts; by third grade they learn multiplication and division.
Students learn about STEM inside and outside the classroom at all grade levels, and explore science in our science lab. We are proud of our newly installed state-of-the-art iMac computer lab, with SmartBoard technology integrated into it. As early as second grade, students begin working with computers; in grades 3–5 they use classroom computers for online assessments, academic intervention, tutoring, internet research and multimedia presentations.
To understand the current social and political climate, students must understand the past. Learning social studies is the best way to do this. Understanding it allows students to make informed decisions about their world — they can become engaged global citizens.
Physical education and health run alongside the school’s social and emotional support programs, with clinical services brought into the building through our community-school partners.
Music at P.S. 30M runs from strings to recorders to rhythm, taught in partnership with programs that have worked in Harlem for years.
Support is built into the school day and beyond it, from early childhood through fifth grade.
Learning does not stop at 2:20 p.m. Partner programs, tutoring and teams run after the school day and on Saturdays.
From the PS 30M Library, all students are free to borrow books. Our Open Access Library is dedicated to the teacher James Boucher, and is a place where students can read, study, and learn Language Arts. We have over 10,000 popular fiction, non-fiction, and picture books that 3-K and Pre-K to fifth-grade children can read. There are a few books for parents as well.
PS 30M is one of a few schools in NYC with access to the NYC Public Library’s book catalog. We have a Certified School Library Media Specialist on staff to help students find the books, and a series of Family Engagement Reading Nights.

The NYC Department of Education rates this building partially accessible, 4 out of 10: “The ground floor is fully accessible, including all public assembly spaces present on the ground floor. At least one accessible bathroom and one accessible general education classroom exist on the ground floor.” The building is shared with other schools.
